[转]瘾科学：哈勃太空望远镜（下）

下集从 1993 年哈勃终于修复完成开始说起，来谈哈勃太空望远镜的太空观测与重要贡献。上集由此去
哈勃处在相当低的轨道，离地仅 559 公里。之所以在这么低的轨道，是为了要方便航天飞机在未来进行维修工作（事实证明这是个正确的决定），而且目前为止已经进行过四次的维修任务，而第五次则是正在进行中。但是哈勃的低轨道，也意味着哈勃的观测作业会受到各式各样的限制 — 在一边是地球，不仅被地球遮到的物体无法观测，地球反射的太阳光也会对哈勃造成类似「光害」的效果，因此地球周围一定范围内的太空观测效果也会打折扣。另一边是太阳，和地球一样，太阳周围也有一大块的范围是无法观测的。除了太阳和地球之外，月球偶尔也会出现来露个脸，但随着月相的变化，月球对哈勃观测的影响也是不定的。因此，哈勃只有在远离黄道面，朝向上方（大约是地球的北方）和下方（南方）两个方向才能持续地观测。其它方向就算没有太阳和月球捣乱，每一圈轨道（96~97 分钟）都会有一半的时间是被地球遮着的。
除了这些天文上的因素的限制外，哈勃本身的低轨道意味着哈勃会持续和大气磨擦。磨擦的力道很小，但却会让哈勃的轨道飘浮不定，六个礼拜（一个半月）的预估位置可以误差到 4000 公里以上。因此哈勃的观测都是几天前才预定的，太早设计好观测计划，反而可能时间到了会刚好被什么挡到。

世界上的著名天文台很多，大望远镜也不少，但却没有一个望远镜能像哈伯一样家喻户晓。前两天亚特兰提斯号航天飞机升空，准备进行哈伯太空望远镜第五次，也是最后一次的维修/升级任务，所以小姜打出两篇瘾科学来纪念这个重要的里程。上篇是哈勃简短的历史，下篇则是哈勃的观测与成就。
这次的维修任务预计将哈勃的服务年限延长到了 2013 年，但在那之后，我们还是要面临着哈勃望远镜该何去何从的问题。哈勃能不能有好个结局？没人知道，但在这之前，我们先来看看哈勃的故事吧！哈勃的诞生
EU slaps a record fine on Intel
May 13th, 2009Computer chipmaker Intel has been fined a record 1.06bn euros ($1.45bn; £948m) by the European Commission for anti-competitive practices.
It dwarfs the 497m euro fine levied on Microsoft in 2004 for abusing its dominant market position.
The Commission found that between 2002 and 2007, Intel had paid manufacturers and a retailer to favour its chips over those of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).
Intel has announced that it will appeal against the verdict.
“Intel takes exception to this decision. We believe the decision is wrong and ignores the reality of a highly competitive microprocessor market,” Intel chief executive Paul Otellini said.
“There has been absolutely zero harm to consumers. Intel will appeal,” he added.
Apple OS X 10.5.7 released, updating to ensue

April 21st, 2009话说周一某实验室有16名同学，有一天x老师把大家叫到一起说：下周来做实验的时候，我会给你们每个人背后贴一张纸，纸上的数字从1到16都有可能，不同同学背后的数字可以重复。你们每个人可以看到别人背上的数字，但不能看到自己的数字。贴纸之后你们之间不允许进行任何交流沟通。之后你们排队依次来实验室，告诉我你自己背后的数字是多少。由于实验室隔音效果很好，室外的人不能听到室内的同学的说话声。等到16名同学都进来猜完之后公布结果。只要你们16个人中间能有一个人猜对自己背后的数字，我会给大家都得满分，但如果你们都没有猜对自己背后数字的话，则你们全部要重修有机实验。那么你要怎样做才能避免挂科的命运呢？
